About Us

Larry A. Braskamp

Larry A. Braskamp received his B.A. from Central College in Pella, Iowa and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. In 1967, he joined the faculty at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where he was awarded a Distinguished Teacher Award. After serving as Assistant to the Chancellor at Nebraska, he came to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 1976. At UIUC he held a number of administrative positions, including Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Acting Dean of the College of Applied Life Studies.

He was Dean of the College of Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) from 1989 until 1996. During the 1996-97 academic year, served as the Executive Director of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. In 1997-98 he was a professor in the College of Education and a Faculty Fellow in the International Center for Health Leadership Development at UIC.

He served as the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Loyola University Chicago from 1998-2002. From 2002-2005, he was a Professor and directed a project on how church related colleges develop students with purpose.

He is the co-author and coeditor of seven books including Putting Students First: How Colleges Develop Students Purposefully and Assessing Faculty Work and The Motivation Factor: A Theory of Personal Investment, and has published over one hundred research articles and papers.

Currently he is Professor Emeritus at Loyola University Chicago and Senior Fellow at the American Association of Colleges and Universities. He is also a Senior Scientist at The Gallup Organization and a member of the Board of Trustees of Elmhurst College.

Kelly Carter Merrill

Kelly Carter Merrill received her BA in studio art and communication from Virginia Tech, MEd in college student personnel from Penn State, and PhD in higher education from Loyola University Chicago. She has worked within higher education settings for over fourteen years, including student affairs, academic administration, and instructional positions at Penn State, Northwestern University, and Loyola University Chicago.

Her research is focused on college student development, specifically intercultural sensitivity development and transgender identity formation.

Currently she is an assistant professor of educational administration in higher education at the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

David C. Braskamp

David C. Braskamp received his B.A. from Hope College, with a major in psychology. He received a M.Ed. in educational psychology from Michigan State University and a M.Ed. in Teacher Education from Northwestern University.

He has held a number of positions in educational technology and measurement at profit and nonprofit organizations, taught a course in statistics at Roosevelt University, and currently is teaching mathematics in the Chicago Public Schools.

He has published in the area of assessment in higher education.
